Sublimation Care & Pressing Guidelines
Sublimation Care & Pressing Guidelines
J.E.T. Stitching – New Tecumseth, Ontario, Canada
Sublimation printing produces a smooth, vibrant finish that becomes part of the material. Unlike vinyl or DTF, sublimation ink bonds into compatible fabrics through heat and pressure. Correct pressing and proper garment selection are critical for durability and colour clarity.
Fabric Requirements
Sublimation works best on:
-
100% polyester garments
-
High-poly blends (65%+ polyester recommended)
-
White or light-coloured materials
Sublimation does not work properly on:
-
100% cotton
-
Dark garments (ink is transparent and will not show correctly)
-
Low-poly blends
If you are unsure about garment compatibility, confirm before ordering.
Heat Press Settings (Standard Guidelines)
These are general starting points. Adjust slightly depending on fabric type and press model.
-
Temperature: 385°F–400°F
-
Time: 45–60 seconds
-
Pressure: Medium to firm, even pressure
Always use:
-
Butcher paper or protective sheet above and below garment
-
A lint roller before pressing to remove debris
Step-by-Step Application Process
1. Pre-Check Garment
-
Ensure garment is polyester or high-poly blend
-
Lint roll to remove dust or fibers
2. Position Transfer
-
Align design carefully
-
Secure with heat-resistant tape if needed
3. Press
-
Apply recommended temperature and pressure
-
Do not open press mid-cycle
4. Remove Immediately
-
Remove paper immediately after pressing
-
Do not allow paper to shift while hot
Common Pressing Mistakes
-
Pressing at too low temperature (results in faded print)
-
Using insufficient pressure (causes dull colours)
-
Using cotton garments (image will not transfer correctly)
-
Re-pressing excessively (can scorch fabric)
Sublimation is permanent when applied correctly. Errors usually come from incorrect fabric choice or incorrect heat settings.
Washing & Care Instructions
To maximize durability:
-
Wash inside out
-
Cold or warm water
-
Mild detergent
-
Avoid bleach
-
Tumble dry low or air dry
-
Do not iron directly on printed area
Sublimation designs do not crack or peel when applied correctly because the ink bonds into the fibers.
Colour Expectations
Colour vibrancy depends on:
-
Polyester content
-
Fabric colour (white produces most accurate results)
-
Heat press consistency
Sublimation ink appears dull before pressing and becomes vibrant after heat activation. This is normal.
Final Responsibility
Before production:
-
Confirm garment is compatible
-
Confirm design size
-
Confirm spelling
-
Confirm placement
Sublimation results depend heavily on proper setup and correct materials.
